Transition to Democracy for Iran - Part 2: The Structure of the IR Regime

The Islamic Republic Regime A) “Republic” The IR regime in Iran claims to be a republic. A republic is a type of government, where people have the power to make political decisions. In Iran, ordinary people have no voice in making important decisions about the economy or politics. The justification that the IR regime provides for ruling and the legitimacy it claims to have as a republic, go back to two referendums. The first one happened directly after the Islamic Revolution in 1979. The second one happened about a year later. In the first referendum, the election committee, which was set up by revolutionary groups and had no independent or international oversight, intentionally made a very one-sided question. The question in the referendum was „do you want the Islamic Republic – yes or no?“ The monarch had already fled the country and the revolutionaries had taken over many governing functions. So, what else would the population vote for if not the only option presented? People never...

Transition to Democracy for Iran - Part 1: A Fair and Just System of Social Cooperation

What is EXACTLY that Iranians protesting against the Islamic Republic Regime want - whichever group, region, leaning or ethnicity they belong to? And what is it that opposition political groups SHOULD want? What should our goal be? What should we work towards? One hears “freedom”, “equality”, “distributing the oil income” and such, but none of these clearly describe a method of governing. Maybe to a person in Khoozestan happiness is having enough drinkable water. Maybe to a woman happiness is not being forced to wear a black veil in the heat of summer. Maybe to a person in Kordestan happiness is having the freedom to make political decisions for their hometown. Maybe...

Transition to Democracy for Iran - Part 0: Foreword

All indications show that Iranians are unsatisfied with the political rule of the Islamic Republic regime (IR regime) and, if possible and without loss of life, livelihood and property, would opt for a democratic political system that respects human rights. Of course, the IR regime is not willing to let go of the power it has.   We are hence faced with the important question “ how can a population that is being ruled by a semi-totalitarian, theocratic dictatorship, produce a positive change in direction of a democracy ?”   Each opposition group of course claims that they have the right answer. And yet, after over 40 years, none of them has been able to achieve a meaningful change. Execution or assassination of important opposition figures, imprisonment of critics and brutal crackdown on critical organizations and groups continue as before.   The most important reason why these opposition groups have so far failed and why, if left to their own accord, they w...
